The trend for leaders in 2023

In our view, 2023 will be the year of the truly hybrid leader.

We’re past the experimental phase with flexible working arrangements – the ability to work occasionally (or permanently) from home is now well and truly a base-level expectation of the professional workforce, right alongside competitive salary.

In a candidate’s market, leaders face novel challenges, including:

  • How do you build a healthy team culture if staff are working remotely for much of the week?

  • How do you keep work moving at a predictable rhythm if your team members select their own hours, spread across the day, to match their caring responsibilities at home?

  • How do you mentor and develop less-experienced team members if they work in an entirely different geography or time zone?

Some of our clients have been facing these challenges for years; they are not new for executives of multinational firms who juggle teams on different continents. But for many of us, 2023 will be the year we have to come to grips with these leadership requirements.

Skills leaders will need in 2023

In 2023, we’ll be working alongside our clients on some very specific skill gaps which will equip them to become truly hybrid leaders. Things like:

  • Building motivation by connecting work to purpose

  • Communicating across different media and getting your message heard

  • Crafting clear expectations and accountabilities and reducing ambiguity

  • Fostering trust through understanding emotional intelligence

  • Creating a strong team culture and promoting wellbeing

Of course, many leaders already have developing capability across some of these themes – and you might too. In the new year, be conscious to keep honing these crucial leadership skills for 2023, and watch for the growing impact on your team.
